About Algebraic Terms Collect Arcade

Algebraic Terms Collect Arcade is where algebra begins for most students, and where a surprising number of them quietly decide it is arbitrary. Three x plus five x equals eight x looks, on first meeting, like a rule handed down by authority — the letters just sit there, apparently untouched, while the numbers do something. Presented that way it is one more thing to remember. Presented properly it is nothing new at all: three lots of something plus five lots of the same something is eight lots of it, in precisely the way three apples plus five apples is eight apples, and the letter is doing no work beyond naming what is being counted. Getting that across at the very start matters more than almost anything else in the year, because every later manipulation assumes it. This game keeps the coefficients large and visible and the arithmetic ordinary, so what is happening is plainly addition rather than a special algebraic operation. The wrong terms drifting past are the two errors students genuinely produce: multiplying the coefficients instead of adding them, which comes from half-remembering a different rule, and landing one either side, which is simple arithmetic slippage and worth distinguishing from the conceptual error. Subtraction joins from the third level, where the possibility of a smaller answer makes the ordering of the terms matter. Terms drift slowly and stop entirely under reduced motion. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 75 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 6 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

❓ FAQ

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • Adding or subtracting the numbers in front of the same letter. 3x plus 5x is 8x, because three lots of x plus five lots of x is eight lots of x.
