About Algebraic Fraction Ops Grid

Algebraic Fraction Ops Grid is where a good many students discover that their fraction arithmetic was never as solid as it appeared. Adding numeric fractions can be survived with a calculator, a half-remembered rule and a certain amount of luck; adding x over three to x over four cannot, because there is nothing to fall back on except the method itself. If the common denominator is not genuinely understood, it shows immediately and unmistakably. Each row of the grid is a different operation on the same kind of object, and that mixing is the whole design. The single most common failure with algebraic fractions is not any one rule but applying the wrong one — multiplying across the top and bottom of an addition, which produces something that looks entirely like a fraction and is not the answer to the question asked. A page of additions never exposes that; a grid where the operation changes every row does, immediately. The letter itself does no work here beyond being carried along, and the game is built to keep that visible: the arithmetic happening to the coefficients is exactly the numeric fraction arithmetic a student has been doing for years, which is a genuinely reassuring thing to notice at this stage rather than a trivial one. Every answer is given in lowest terms, and each row carries a clue naming the method and a hint showing the result. Rows grow from one to four with the level. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 150 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

❓ FAQ

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • Because there is nothing to fall back on. A calculator and a half-remembered rule get you through numeric fractions; x over three plus x over four needs the method.
