About Algebraic Fractions Four Operations
Algebraic fractions follow exactly the same rules as numerical ones, and the reason they feel harder is that the letters make pupils reach for shortcuts that are not rules at all. The commonest is cancelling across a sum — striking an x from the top and bottom of an expression where the x is a term rather than a factor. Nothing on this worksheet models that move: every fraction here is a monomial over a monomial, which is precisely the form in which every part is a factor and cancellation is provably safe. Addition and subtraction require a common denominator and combine like terms in the numerator; multiplication multiplies across and reduces; division multiplies by the reciprocal, and the variable cancels because it genuinely divides out of both. All the arithmetic runs on exact integer numerator and denominator pairs, never on decimals. The levels take one operation at a time — addition, then subtraction alongside it, then multiplication, then division by the reciprocal — before mixing all four at the highest level. Denominators are never zero. Twelve questions per page. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet in black and white and downloads with its own separate answer key. A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
- While they work
- Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
- Afterwards
- Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
- Watch out for
- Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
- Away from the screen
- Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
