About Inverse Operations Check True/False

Addition and subtraction undo each other, and that is not merely a fact about them — it is the only checking method a Grade 2 child has. If fifteen take away six leaves nine, then nine and six should give fifteen back; if it does not, something has gone wrong and the child can find it themselves. This worksheet drills that check until it is automatic. Every statement shows a subtraction together with the addition that is supposed to confirm it, and the child decides whether the check holds. The subtraction is always correct — what varies is whether the addition genuinely returns to the starting number. That is the design: if the subtraction were sometimes wrong too, the question would become "find the error somewhere" rather than "does this check work", and the relationship being taught would blur. Where the check fails, it fails by only one or two, so the answer has to be worked out rather than spotted. True and False are balanced by construction, half of each on every page, shuffled with no run longer than three. Eight statements per page with tick boxes and its own separate answer key. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Have something countable nearby. Being able to check "3 and 2 really is 5" by counting builds trust in the maths.
While they work
If a sum is hard, suggest counting on from the bigger number rather than counting both from one. It is a real strategy, not a crutch.
Afterwards
Try one together out loud, talking through how you worked it out. Hearing an adult think aloud is genuinely useful.
Watch out for
Counting both numbers from one every time. Nudge gently towards "start at the bigger one and count on".
Away from the screen
Add up small shopping items, or dots on two dice. Board games with dice are addition practice in disguise.
