About Odd and Even Sum Rules True/False

Odd plus odd is always even. That is a genuinely different kind of statement from anything a Grade 2 child has met — it is not about particular numbers but about every pair at once, and noticing that a rule can hold always is the beginning of mathematical reasoning. This worksheet builds towards it in two stages. The early levels give concrete sums and ask whether the answer is odd or even, so the pupil can check by working it out and start to feel the pattern. The top two levels state the rule itself, without numbers, and ask whether it always holds — which cannot be settled by one calculation. Where a statement is false it states the wrong parity while the arithmetic underneath remains correct, so a child cannot pass by spotting a wrong sum; the parity is the only thing in question. True and False are balanced by construction, half of each on every page, shuffled with no run longer than three. Eight statements per page with tick boxes. Common questions

What makes this different from ordinary addition?
It is about every pair of numbers at once rather than particular ones. Noticing that a rule always holds is the start of reasoning.
How do the levels progress?
Concrete sums first, so the pattern can be felt, then the rule stated without numbers at the top two levels.
Are the false statements arithmetically wrong?
No — only the parity is wrong. The sums themselves are always correct.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Have something countable nearby. Being able to check "3 and 2 really is 5" by counting builds trust in the maths.
While they work
If a sum is hard, suggest counting on from the bigger number rather than counting both from one. It is a real strategy, not a crutch.
Afterwards
Try one together out loud, talking through how you worked it out. Hearing an adult think aloud is genuinely useful.
Watch out for
Counting both numbers from one every time. Nudge gently towards "start at the bigger one and count on".
Away from the screen
Add up small shopping items, or dots on two dice. Board games with dice are addition practice in disguise.
