About Coordinates in 4 Quadrants
Coordinates in 4 Quadrants helps Grade 6 and 7 learners read and write coordinates across the full coordinate plane, including the negative quadrants. Each worksheet shows a labelled grid with points marked in all four quadrants, and the student writes the coordinates of each point as an ordered pair. Reading coordinates with negative values, and understanding that the first number is the horizontal position and the second the vertical, is a core lower-secondary expectation across the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and it is the foundation for plotting graphs, describing transformations and later coordinate geometry. Many students are comfortable in the first quadrant but stumble once negatives appear, so practising across all four quadrants is exactly where the value lies. The grid is clearly drawn with both axes labelled, and points are placed in a range of positions so students meet every combination of positive and negative coordinates. - Before you start
- Point out a few shapes in the room first. Geometry starts with noticing, and it is everywhere.
- While they work
- Encourage them to turn shapes around and look from different angles — literally, with a real object if there is one.
- Afterwards
- Go on a shape hunt around the house together. Naming real shapes cements the vocabulary.
- Watch out for
- Thinking a rotated square is a "diamond", or that size changes what a shape is. Turning a real cut-out shows it is the same shape.
- Away from the screen
- Spot shapes on a walk, build with blocks, fold paper into shapes. Talk about corners and sides.
