About Index Notation Fill-in
Index Notation Fill-in introduces Grade 7 and 8 learners to powers and the index laws, a compact and powerful piece of mathematical notation. Each question asks the student either to write a repeated product in index form, such as writing two multiplied by itself four times as two to the power four, or to simplify an expression using the laws of indices, such as multiplying or dividing powers of the same base by adding or subtracting the exponents. Understanding index notation and the basic index laws is a core lower-secondary expectation across the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and it is essential groundwork for standard form, surds and exponential growth in later years. Writing powers correctly and knowing that multiplying powers means adding indices are exactly the ideas these questions rehearse. Because the bases and exponents change every time, the worksheet stays fresh and reusable, and the five levels grow the size of the exponents. Each page prints cleanly on a standard A4 sheet, and every level downloads with its own answer key giving the correct index form for each question. There is no advertising and no sign-up. A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
- While they work
- Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
- Afterwards
- Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
- Watch out for
- Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
- Away from the screen
- Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
