About Balance the Equation Fill-in

Most children arrive at this topic believing the equals sign means "and the answer is". It does not — it means both sides are worth the same — and the misunderstanding is invisible until they meet an equation with something on both sides and confidently write the total of the left-hand side in the box on the right. This worksheet exists to correct that, so every question here has two terms on each side. Nothing can be answered by simply adding up what you see; one side has to be worked out before the other can be solved. The blank moves between sides from the second level onward, so a child cannot settle into a single procedure, and from the middle levels subtraction appears on one side while addition sits on the other, which is where the idea is genuinely tested. Everything stays within twenty, so the arithmetic is never the obstacle — the structure is. Twelve questions per page in two columns. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet in black and white and downloads with its own separate answer key. Its on-screen twin is Balance the Equation Scales.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Have something countable nearby. Being able to check "3 and 2 really is 5" by counting builds trust in the maths.
While they work
If a sum is hard, suggest counting on from the bigger number rather than counting both from one. It is a real strategy, not a crutch.
Afterwards
Try one together out loud, talking through how you worked it out. Hearing an adult think aloud is genuinely useful.
Watch out for
Counting both numbers from one every time. Nudge gently towards "start at the bigger one and count on".
Away from the screen
Add up small shopping items, or dots on two dice. Board games with dice are addition practice in disguise.
