About Two Step Story Problems to 20

A two-step problem asks a child to hold something in their head that nobody has written down. The number after the first step does not appear anywhere in the question, and it is not the answer either — it is a staging post, and forgetting it is the single most common failure here. That is a working-memory skill as much as an arithmetic one, which is why these problems keep every number small: everything stays within twenty, so the child's attention goes on the structure rather than on the addition. Each story follows one shape — a starting amount, something given away, then something gained — so the two steps are always in the same order while the numbers change. The intermediate value is never negative, because "minus three" is not something a Grade 2 child can hold as a stage, and the final total never exceeds twenty. Common questions

Why keep the numbers so small?
Because the difficulty is holding the middle number, not the arithmetic. Small numbers keep attention on the structure.
What is the most common mistake?
Forgetting the number after the first step. It appears nowhere in the question and is not the answer either.
Can the middle value be negative?
No. "Minus three" is not something a Grade 2 child can hold as a stage.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Have something countable nearby. Being able to check "3 and 2 really is 5" by counting builds trust in the maths.
While they work
If a sum is hard, suggest counting on from the bigger number rather than counting both from one. It is a real strategy, not a crutch.
Afterwards
Try one together out loud, talking through how you worked it out. Hearing an adult think aloud is genuinely useful.
Watch out for
Counting both numbers from one every time. Nudge gently towards "start at the bigger one and count on".
