About Base Ten Regrouping Match
Regrouping is a rule about digits, and it is learned properly only once a child has seen the thing the rule describes: ten single cubes being swapped for one rod. This worksheet puts that swap in front of them. The left column shows base ten blocks — tall notched rods for tens, small squares for ones — but always with more than nine ones, so what is pictured is not yet in standard form. The child works out what the blocks are worth and draws a line to the number on the right. Three tens and fourteen ones is forty-four, and seeing why is the entire lesson. The rods are drawn with their ten notches rather than as plain bars, because a bar does not show why it is worth ten. Every number on the right is different, which the matching requires. The levels raise how many tens appear and how far past ten the loose ones go, so the regroup gets larger and the arithmetic less obvious. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet in black and white and downloads with its own separate answer key giving the correct letter for each row. Its on-screen twin is Base Ten Regroup Lab.
Common questions
- Why do the pictures show more than nine ones?
- Because that is what forces a regroup. A picture already in standard form has nothing to work out.
- Why are the rods notched?
- A plain bar does not show why it is worth ten. The ten segments are the point.
- Can two rows have the same answer?
- No. Every number on the page is different, which the matching requires.
- Is an answer key included?
- Yes. Every level downloads with a key giving the correct letter for each row.
A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
- While they work
- Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
- Afterwards
- Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
- Watch out for
- Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
- Away from the screen
- Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
