About Box Plot Analysis

Box Plot Analysis gives upper-secondary learners practice reading box-and-whisker plots and calculating the statistics that describe a data set’s spread. Each worksheet shows a box plot marking the minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile and maximum, and the student reads off the median and works out the interquartile range and the range. Interpreting box plots and computing the interquartile range is a core Grade 8 to 9 statistics expectation across the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and box plots are one of the clearest ways to compare the spread and centre of data sets at a glance. Reading a box plot well means understanding that the box spans the middle half of the data and that the interquartile range, the width of the box, measures spread while resisting the influence of extreme values. The plot is drawn clearly on a labelled scale so students can read each value accurately. The five levels vary the five-number summary so the worksheet stays fresh and reusable. Each page prints cleanly on a standard A4 sheet, and every level downloads with its own answer key giving the median, interquartile range and range. There is no advertising and no sign-up.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
