About Cumulative Frequency Graph
Cumulative Frequency Graph gives upper-secondary learners practice reading and interpreting a cumulative frequency curve, one of the most important tools in statistics. Each worksheet shows a cumulative frequency curve built from grouped data, and the student answers questions about it: the total frequency, an estimate of the median by reading off the value at half the total, and how many values fall below a given point. Drawing and interpreting cumulative frequency curves is a core Grade 8 to 9 statistics expectation across the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and it is the gateway to estimating medians, quartiles and interquartile ranges from grouped data. Reading the curve well means understanding that each plotted point shows the running total of frequencies up to that value, and using the curve to estimate statistics rather than reading exact values — a genuinely different skill from working with a simple table. The curve is drawn clearly with labelled axes so students can read across and down accurately. The five levels vary the data so the worksheet stays fresh and reusable. A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
- While they work
- Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
- Afterwards
- Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
- Watch out for
- Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
- Away from the screen
- Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
