About Integer Add Subtract Vault

Integer Add Subtract Vault is the first of our Logic Masters games and it targets the single most reliable place where a confident arithmetic student suddenly starts getting things wrong. The cause is not difficulty in any ordinary sense — it is that two entirely different minus signs are in play at once. One means subtract, an instruction to do something; the other means negative, a property of the number itself. Written down they look identical, and an expression like 3 minus negative 5 contains both. Children cope by inventing rules, and the rules they invent tend to work on the examples they were shown and fail elsewhere: two minuses make a plus is repeated confidently by students who then apply it to negative three plus negative four and produce seven. This game therefore uses all four combinations deliberately — adding a negative, subtracting a positive, subtracting a negative, and starting from a negative — rather than the two that appear most often in textbooks. A pupil who meets only the common cases builds exactly the fragile rules described above. The wrong answers are the sign errors themselves: the right magnitude with the wrong sign, and the result of treating a double negative as a subtraction, so a slip in reasoning is caught rather than accidentally landing on the right answer. Subtracting a negative, the hardest case, is held back until the third level. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children, progress kept on the device.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

An equation with a missing answer — for example "4 + 1 = ?" — is shown in large text. A timer bar starts counting down from 50 seconds.

  2. Tap or press the correct answer

Four answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap an answer, or press keys 1–4 on the keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak counter. A streak of 5 or more turns the flame icon orange and awards a streak bonus to your XP for that level.

  4. Complete the level to finish

Each level has 8 questions. Complete them correctly to earn the full level XP (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP perfect bonus). Your progress is saved automatically between sessions.

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • Because two different minus signs are in play. One means subtract, the other means negative, and they look identical on the page.
