All Smart Starters gamesRace between frozen research stations by adding and subtracting mixed numbers against a friendly timer, for ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Mixed Number Speed Dash is an Arctic expedition race where children sprint between frozen research stations by solving mixed-number challenges against a friendly timer. Each correct answer powers the snow vehicle on to the next checkpoint, building speed and confidence with adding and subtracting mixed numbers. It is built for ages 8 to 10 (grade 4 and grade 5) with clear instructions, large touch targets, and gentle pacing, so children can play independently or alongside a parent. Questions use the same denominator family at first and grow toward regrouping a whole, so learners practise converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers as a natural part of play rather than as a worksheet drill. Correct answers bring encouraging sounds, ice-crystal effects, and a small celebration, while mistakes are never punished and simply invite another try, which keeps confidence high. Difficulty grows step by step so the challenge always matches the child, supporting steady, progressive learning across the upper-primary fractions curriculum used in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. The game runs in any modern browser with no app to install, no sign-up, and no advertising shown to children. Progress is saved only on the device and appears in the Parent Dashboard, so families can follow growth without any data leaving the browser. It pairs well with our Smart Starters fraction worksheets for offline practice of the same skills.
Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
An equation with a missing answer — for example "4 + 1 = ?" — is shown in large text. A timer bar starts counting down from 12 seconds.
Four answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap an answer, or press keys 1–4 on the keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak counter. A streak of 5 or more turns the flame icon orange and awards a streak bonus to your XP for that level.
Each level has 6 questions. Complete them correctly to earn the full level XP (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP perfect bonus). Your progress is saved automatically between sessions.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
