About Equal Groups Farm Pens

Equal Groups Farm Pens builds the idea that everything about multiplication eventually rests on. Groups of farm animals appear at the bottom of the screen — three chicks, two piglets, four ducks — and each pen holds a stated number. The child puts every group into the pen that holds exactly that many. The skill being practised is called unitising, and it is the ability to see three chicks as one group of three rather than as three separate animals. Without it, arrays, repeated addition and times tables are all just collections of numbers to memorise; with it, they make obvious sense. Group sizes repeat across different animals on purpose, so a child meets three chicks and three ducks in the same round and has a chance to notice that the animals are irrelevant and only the count matters. That realisation, that a group of three is a group of three whatever it contains, is the actual abstraction the game exists to provoke, and it is far more valuable arriving on its own than being announced. Groups stay small, between two and five, and the number of pens grows slowly so the board never becomes a search task instead of a counting one. Animals can be dragged with a finger or mouse, or selected and placed by tap or keyboard, and every group states its count in words as well as showing the animals, so nothing depends on being able to count small pictures. There is no sign-up, no advertising shown to children, and progress never leaves the device. It leads naturally into our Grade 3 array and times table content.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 90 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

❓ FAQ

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • It teaches unitising — seeing three chicks as one group of three. That idea has to be in place before arrays, repeated addition and times tables make sense.
