About Array Rows and Columns Count
An array turns multiplication into something a child can point at. Rows across, columns down, and the total is what they make together — no counting one by one required once the structure is seen. This worksheet asks for exactly that and nothing more: count the rows, count the columns, write the multiplication fact. Reading the same array the other way round, which shows that the order of the factors does not matter, is a Grade 3 idea and gets its own worksheet a year later; asking for it here would blur the simpler thing being learned now. Each page shows six arrays of dots drawn at a size that stays countable when printed in black and white, with a ruled line beside each for the fact. Array sizes grow across the levels from small squares up to ten a side, so the counting stays honest as the totals get larger. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet and downloads with its own separate answer key giving the fact and its product. - Why only one fact per array?
- Reading an array both ways is a Grade 3 idea with its own worksheet. Asking for it here would blur the simpler thing being learned.

A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
- While they work
- Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
- Afterwards
- Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
- Watch out for
- Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
- Away from the screen
- Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
