About Multiplying Decimals

Multiplying decimals is the one decimal operation where lining up the points is actively unhelpful, and pupils who have just spent a term aligning them find that genuinely disorienting. The method is different: multiply as though the points were not there, then count the decimal places in both numbers and put that many into the answer. This worksheet drills exactly that count, which is where the errors are — the multiplication itself is usually fine and the point lands in the wrong place. Every question is generated from whole numbers scaled by a power of ten, so the product and its number of decimal places are computed exactly and the printed answer is the direct result of that calculation rather than a string with a point inserted afterwards. That distinction matters more than it sounds: string manipulation is how a worksheet ends up asserting that a product has one decimal place when it has two. The second factor is a whole number at the early levels and gains a decimal place later, so the count a pupil has to make grows from simple to genuinely two-sided. Twelve questions per page.
