About Distributive Property Split Drag

Distributive Property Split Drag names the rule that has been quietly running underneath every written multiplication method on this site. The grid method splits a number by place value and multiplies each part; partial products writes the same splits down the page; the area model draws them as rectangles; long multiplication compresses them until they are almost invisible. All four are the distributive property, and a student who meets the property by name at this point can suddenly see four techniques they have been taught separately as one idea with four costumes. That reframing is worth a great deal at exactly this age, because the property is about to reappear in algebra as expanding brackets, where a student who recognises it has almost nothing new to learn and a student who does not has to start from scratch. Cards on the board show possible ways of splitting a product and the child sorts the genuine equalities from the impostors. The wrong cards are the errors that actually happen rather than obvious nonsense: multiplying the tens and then simply adding the ones without multiplying them, which is the single most common slip and produces an answer close enough to look right, and splitting the product into two multiplications that get multiplied together rather than added. Both look structurally plausible, which is precisely why they need meeting head on. Cards can be dragged or placed by tap or keyboard. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

    A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 110 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

    Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

    Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

    Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
