About Column Subtraction Across Zeros

Subtracting across a zero is the single hardest case in column subtraction, and it is hard for a specific reason: there is nothing in the tens column to exchange from, so the exchange has to travel one place further, out of the hundreds and through the zero. Children who are entirely secure elsewhere stall here, and many resort to writing the difference between the digits and moving on. Every question on this worksheet has a zero in the tens column of the top number, so the double journey is required every time rather than appearing occasionally — a page where most problems exchange normally would let a child practise the case they already know. The ones digit on top is always smaller than the one beneath it, so the exchange is genuinely needed, and no answer is ever negative. Hundreds digits grow across the five levels while the structure stays fixed, which is the point: the difficulty is the zero, not the size of the numbers. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Objects to take away make subtraction concrete — start with a small pile they can physically remove from.
While they work
For "8 − 3", some children count back and some count up from 3 to 8. Both are correct; let them use whichever they find easier.
Afterwards
Talk about "how many are left" and "how many more" in real situations — they are the same idea wearing different words.
Watch out for
Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger out of habit in column sums (e.g. 41 − 8 giving 47). Point back to which number is on top.
Away from the screen
Eat some of a snack pile and ask how many are left. Spend pretend money and work out the change.
