About Standard Form Operations Sprint

Standard Form Operations Sprint covers the half of standard form our existing conversion game does not: doing arithmetic with it. Multiplying is two moves — multiply the mantissas, add the indices — and dividing is the same two moves in reverse. Neither is difficult, and students generally get both right. What they miss is the third move, which nobody thinks of as a move at all: re-normalising the result. Four times five is twenty, so multiplying four times ten to the seven by five times ten to the something produces twenty times ten to a power, and twenty is not a number that can sit in front of a power of ten in standard form. The mantissa has to be between one and ten, so twenty times ten to the seven becomes two times ten to the eight. A student who stops one step early has an answer that is numerically exactly right and is not in standard form, which means it is wrong for the purposes of the question and looks entirely correct to the person who wrote it. That un-normalised form is offered as an option in every round for precisely that reason. The other wrong options cover multiplying the indices instead of adding them, and landing one power out. Multiplication alone at the first two levels, with division joining from the third, where a mantissa below one forces normalisation in the other direction. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

An equation with a missing answer — for example "4 + 1 = ?" — is shown in large text. A timer bar starts counting down from 55 seconds.

  2. Tap or press the correct answer

Four answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap an answer, or press keys 1–4 on the keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak counter. A streak of 5 or more turns the flame icon orange and awards a streak bonus to your XP for that level.

  4. Complete the level to finish

Each level has 8 questions. Complete them correctly to earn the full level XP (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP perfect bonus). Your progress is saved automatically between sessions.
