About Standard Form Multiply and Divide

Standard form multiplication has two halves that pupils reliably get right separately and wrong together: multiply the coefficients, add the powers. The arithmetic is easy; the discipline is in what happens next. If the coefficients multiply to something ten or larger, the answer is not yet in standard form, and writing twenty-four times ten to the seventh loses the mark even though the value is correct. This worksheet drills that normalisation step deliberately, and the fourth level exists specifically to force it. Coefficients are held internally as integers scaled by ten rather than as decimals, so every product and quotient is exact and normalisation is a digit shift rather than a floating-point division — no answer on these pages can carry the trailing nonsense that turns a clean result into an unmarkable one. Divisions are constructed so the coefficients divide exactly, keeping the focus on the exponent arithmetic. The levels move from multiplication alone, to division alone, to larger exponents, to answers that must be renormalised, to a mix of both operations. Twelve questions per page. Common questions

Why does normalising matter so much?
A value can be correct and still not be in standard form. Writing 24 × 10⁷ instead of 2.4 × 10⁸ loses the mark.
Are the answers exact?
Yes. Coefficients are held as scaled integers, so no answer carries a floating-point artefact.
Do the divisions come out cleanly?
Yes. They are constructed so the coefficients divide exactly, keeping the focus on the exponent arithmetic.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
