About LCM HCF Ladder Climb

LCM HCF Ladder Climb asks for both answers from the same pair of numbers, and then for a check that ties them together. Producing both in one round is the whole design, because the difficulty here is almost never the arithmetic — it is that highest common factor and lowest common multiple are four words that all sound like each other, and students who can compute both perfectly well still routinely give the one that was not asked for. Being forced to produce both, from the same starting point, in the same round, is what makes the distinction stick in a way that reciting definitions does not. The third row is where the game earns its place. The highest common factor multiplied by the lowest common multiple always equals the product of the two original numbers, without exception, and a student who has verified that a dozen times has acquired something genuinely useful: a way of checking their own answer that requires no help and no answer key. If HCF times LCM does not come to the product, one of the two is wrong, and they know it immediately rather than at the end of a test. Each row carries a clue naming what is being asked and a hint that shows the prime factors rather than the answer. The distractors offered are the two original numbers and their sum, which is what a student produces when the words have blurred. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

    A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 140 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

    Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

    Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

    Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
