About Ratio Divide Share Sim

Ratio Divide Share Sim walks the standard method for sharing an amount in a ratio, one step at a time. Add the parts of the ratio to find how many shares there are altogether, divide the total by that to find what a single share is worth, then multiply back up for whichever part the question asks for. Laid out like that it is three short steps, and the reason this topic causes so much trouble is that students skip the first one. Asked to share sixty in the ratio two to three, a very large number of them divide sixty by two, or by three, and produce thirty or twenty — numbers that are the right sort of size, arrive quickly, and are completely wrong. Nothing about the answer signals the mistake, which is why it survives so long. This game therefore shows the number of shares as its own line in the table, and offers the divide-by-a-ratio-number answer as one of the options every single time, so a student making that error lands on it deliberately rather than being marked down for something nobody has named for them. Sharing in a ratio is a staple of UK exam papers and is almost entirely unserved by interactive material, which is why the plan flags it. Questions alternate between asking for the larger and the smaller part, so the answer can never be found by taking whichever number looks bigger. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Something you can cut or fold helps enormously — paper, fruit, a sandwich. A half you can see beats a half you are told about.
While they work
Keep coming back to "equal parts". A shape split into unequal bits is the classic fractions trap.
Afterwards
Fold a piece of paper into halves, then quarters, together. Watching the pieces double is a lightbulb moment for many children.
Watch out for
Thinking a bigger bottom number means a bigger fraction (that 1/8 > 1/4). Cutting a real thing into 8 vs 4 pieces settles it fast.
Away from the screen
Cut food into equal parts at mealtimes. Fold paper. Talk about "half" and "quarter" of everyday things.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 130 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
