About Dividing Fractions with Reciprocals

Dividing by a fraction is the operation pupils are most likely to perform correctly without understanding, because "flip and multiply" is easy to memorise and hard to justify. This worksheet keeps the method visible rather than assuming it. Every question prints the reciprocal step in the middle of the line, so the pupil sees the division rewritten as a multiplication before working out the answer, and the transformation is practised as many times as the answer is. A sheet showing only the bare division would test whether a pupil remembers a trick; this one rehearses the method itself. Divisors are always non-zero proper fractions, so every reciprocal is valid, and from the middle levels the pairs are chosen so the result needs simplifying. All arithmetic is exact integer work on a numerator and denominator pair — no fraction is ever evaluated as a decimal, which matters most here, since one third has no exact decimal form at all. Common questions

Why is the reciprocal printed on the line?
Because the method is what is being taught. A bare division would test whether a pupil remembers a trick rather than rehearsing why it works.
Can a divisor ever be zero?
No. Divisors are always non-zero proper fractions, so every reciprocal is valid.
Why does exact arithmetic matter here?
One third has no exact decimal form. Working in numerators and denominators means no answer can be off by a rounding artefact.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Something you can cut or fold helps enormously — paper, fruit, a sandwich. A half you can see beats a half you are told about.
While they work
Keep coming back to "equal parts". A shape split into unequal bits is the classic fractions trap.
Afterwards
Fold a piece of paper into halves, then quarters, together. Watching the pieces double is a lightbulb moment for many children.
Watch out for
Thinking a bigger bottom number means a bigger fraction (that 1/8 > 1/4). Cutting a real thing into 8 vs 4 pieces settles it fast.
Away from the screen
Cut food into equal parts at mealtimes. Fold paper. Talk about "half" and "quarter" of everyday things.
