All Smart Starters gamesRound to estimate an answer, then calculate exactly and compare the two. For ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Estimate and Check Camp rounds the numbers, produces an estimate, and then asks for the real answer. Estimation gets taught as a way of being quick, which undersells it badly. Its actual value is that it is the only habit that reliably catches an answer which is out by a factor of ten — the kind of mistake that comes from a misplaced decimal point or a forgotten carry, and which a child otherwise has no way of noticing because the digits all look plausible. A pupil who knows that 387 plus 214 is somewhere around 600 will not write 60 or 6000 and move on. The first two levels ask only for the estimate, so rounding becomes reliable before anything is built on it. From the third level the question asks for the exact answer instead — and the estimate is deliberately offered as one of the options. That is the design decision that makes this more than a rounding drill. A child who stops at the estimate and hands it in has done half the work, and unless the estimate is available to be chosen nobody ever finds out that this is what happened; they simply lose a mark and are told to check their work, which is not something they know how to act on. Both addition and subtraction appear, rounding to the nearest hundred at the lower levels and the nearest thousand higher up, so the estimate stays genuinely useful rather than becoming the answer by accident. Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 120 seconds.
Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.
Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.
