About Near Doubles Fill-in

Once a child knows their doubles, near doubles come free — and most children do not notice that until someone points it out. Six plus seven looks like a new fact to learn until you see it is six plus six with one more on the end. This worksheet makes that visible on every line. Each question shows the near double rewritten through the double it depends on, so the child works six plus seven as six plus six plus one and writes the total, using knowledge they already have instead of counting on their fingers. Printing the intermediate step is deliberate: a near doubles worksheet showing only the bare sum is just an addition worksheet with a misleading title, and the strategy would never be practised. The five levels widen the range of doubles in play, so a child who is secure to five moves up to doubles within ten as their recall grows.
