Little Learners · Ages 5 to 7
All Little Learners gamesSolve 6 plus 7 by doubling 6 and adding one, building the near doubles strategy for ages 5 to 7.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Near Doubles Dash takes a fact a child already knows and gets a second fact free. Double 6 is 12, and most children who have practised doubles can produce that instantly. 6 plus 7 looks like a different and harder question, but it is only double 6 with one more added on. That is the whole strategy, and once a child has it, an entire band of addition facts stops needing to be memorised at all because each one sits right next to a double they already own. Every question in this game pairs two numbers exactly one apart, and the prompt names the double to lean on, because the strategy is the content here — a child who gets the right answer by counting has not learned what this game exists to teach. Both directions appear: sometimes the near double is one more than the double, sometimes one less, which stops the game becoming a habit of always adding one without thinking about why. Numbers grow with the level, and the four answer options sit close together so a child who is one out can be told apart from a child who is guessing. Answers stay well inside twenty. This game runs on the timed speed format, but the pace is set for accuracy rather than pressure, wrong answers cost nothing and move straight on, and the level can be replayed as often as a child likes. It is free, needs no sign-up, shows no advertising to children, and keeps progress on the device where it appears in the Parent Dashboard.
Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
An equation with a missing answer — for example "4 + 1 = ?" — is shown in large text. A timer bar starts counting down from 60 seconds.
Four answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap an answer, or press keys 1–4 on the keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak counter. A streak of 5 or more turns the flame icon orange and awards a streak bonus to your XP for that level.
Each level has 6 questions. Complete them correctly to earn the full level XP (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP perfect bonus). Your progress is saved automatically between sessions.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
