About Rounding and Estimating Number Line

Rounding is taught as a rule about digits and understood as a fact about position, and pupils who have only met the rule are the ones who round 45 down because "five goes down" or freeze when the digit after the five is not a zero. A number line makes the position visible: mark the value, look at which end of the interval it sits nearer, and the answer is obvious before any rule is applied. Each question here shows an interval spanning exactly one rounding unit, with the ends and the midpoint labelled and minor ticks between them. The pupil marks the exact value, decides which end it is closer to, and writes the rounded result. Only the ends and the midpoint carry labels, so the position genuinely has to be read rather than counted off. The scale changes across the levels — single units, then fives, then tens — so a pupil practises reading intervals where a tick is worth more than one, which is where misreading usually starts. Every value falls exactly on a printed tick, so nothing is ever marked in a gap. Six lines per page. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet with its own separate answer key.

Common questions

Why use a number line to teach rounding?

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.
