About Divisibility Rules True/False
A divisibility rule answers a question faster than doing the division, and that is the whole reason to learn one. Is 738 divisible by three? Adding the digits gives eighteen, which is, so it is — and that took a second where the division would have taken thirty. This worksheet is built so the rules genuinely pay off: the numbers are large enough that dividing them out is the slower route, which is what makes a child reach for the test instead. The rules arrive in teaching order. The first level uses the ones-digit rules for two, five and ten, which are almost visual. Three and nine follow, with their digit-sum tests. Then four and eight, which look at the last two or three digits, and finally six and seven at the top level — six because it combines two tests, and seven because it has no easy rule at all and forces a check. Truth is computed by division behind the scenes, so the key can never disagree with the arithmetic; the rule is simply the fast way to reach the same answer. Common questions
- Why are the numbers large?
- So the rule is genuinely faster than dividing. Small numbers would let a child divide instead and never use the test.
- In what order do the rules arrive?
- Ones-digit rules for 2, 5 and 10 first, then the digit-sum rules for 3 and 9, then 4 and 8, and finally 6 and 7.
- Why is seven included at the top level?
- Because it has no easy rule, so it forces a genuine check rather than a pattern.
- Is the True/False split balanced?
- Yes, by construction — half of each on every page.
A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Have something shareable to hand — counters, grapes, coins. Division is "share these out equally", and that is easier shown than told.
- While they work
- Encourage dealing out one-at-a-time into equal groups, like cards. It makes remainders visible and obvious.
- Afterwards
- Share something for real — biscuits between the family — and ask how many each, and how many left over.
- Watch out for
- Forgetting the groups must be EQUAL. Dealing one-at-a-time rather than grabbing handfuls keeps them even.
- Away from the screen
- Share snacks, deal cards, split a pile of coins. Any fair-sharing situation is division practice.
