About Factor Pairs Match
Finding one factor pair is easy; finding all of them is a systematic search, and that search is what this worksheet is for. Working up from one and stopping when the pairs start repeating is a method a child can rely on, and it turns "what are the factors of thirty-six" from a memory question into a procedure. Each row gives a number and the answer column holds its complete set of factor pairs, so a child who finds three of the four cannot match the row — the completeness is checked by the task itself rather than by a mark scheme. Prime numbers are excluded, since a single pair makes the search trivial, and every number on the page has at least the minimum number of pairs the level requires. Numbers grow across the five levels and so does the number of pairs to find, from two up to four or more. Every answer on the page is a different set, which the matching requires. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet in black and white and downloads with its own separate answer key giving the correct letter for each row. Its on-screen twin is Factor Pair Fishing.
Common questions
- How do you find all the factor pairs?
- Work up from one and stop when the pairs start repeating. That is a method rather than a memory test.
- Are prime numbers included?
- No. A single pair would make the search trivial.
- What if a child finds only some of the pairs?
- The row will not match. Completeness is checked by the task itself.
- Is an answer key included?
- Yes. Every level downloads with a key giving the correct letter for each row.
A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
- While they work
- Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
- Afterwards
- Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
- Watch out for
- Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
- Away from the screen
- Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
