About Multiplication and Division Word Problems Grade 3

A child who can multiply fluently can still be defeated by a word problem, because the hard part is not the arithmetic but deciding which operation the sentence is asking for. This worksheet is built around that decision. Both kinds of problem use the same containers and the same quantities — boxes of pencils, trays of cakes — and are told apart only by their wording: one gives the number of groups and asks for the total, the other gives the total and asks how many go in each group. Nothing about the numbers themselves reveals which is which, so a child who has learned to guess from the size of the digits gets no help at all. Every division is constructed from its factors, so the answer is always a whole number and no problem produces a remainder a Grade 3 child has not been asked to interpret. Factor sizes grow across the five levels while the structure stays constant. Six problems per page with ruled working space beneath each, because writing the number sentence down before calculating is exactly the habit this worksheet is building. Common questions

What is the hard part of a word problem?
Deciding which operation the sentence asks for. The arithmetic is usually well within reach.
Can a child guess from the numbers?
No. Both kinds use the same quantities and containers; only the wording distinguishes them.
Do any problems have remainders?
No. Every division is built from its factors, so all answers are whole numbers.
Is there room to show working?
Yes. Ruled space sits beneath each question for the number sentence.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
