About Subtraction Count Back Hop

Subtraction Count Back Hop puts subtraction on a track. The prompt gives a starting number and how many hops to take backwards, and the child taps the lily pad they land on. Counting back is the first subtraction strategy most children can use reliably, and putting it on a track rather than in a written sum makes the movement visible: taking away means going down the number line, and taking away three means going down exactly three. The hops are kept to one, two or three on purpose. Counting back is efficient only for small amounts — past three it becomes slow and error-prone, and a child who has been drilled on long count-backs will keep reaching for the slow method when they should be using a bond or bridging through ten instead. Teaching the strategy alongside its limits is more honest than teaching it as though it always works. Numbers run up to twenty, which is what places this above our One Less Balloon Pop game for toddlers: that one is a single step within ten, this one is several steps within twenty. The distractor lily pads are the immediate neighbours of the answer and the starting number itself, because being one out and losing track of where you started are the two mistakes worth telling apart. Lily pads drift gently and stop entirely for children who use the reduced motion setting. Every pad is reachable by tap or keyboard and announced to screen readers. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children, progress kept on the device.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Objects to take away make subtraction concrete — start with a small pile they can physically remove from.
While they work
For "8 − 3", some children count back and some count up from 3 to 8. Both are correct; let them use whichever they find easier.
Afterwards
Talk about "how many are left" and "how many more" in real situations — they are the same idea wearing different words.
Watch out for
Subtracting the smaller digit from the larger out of habit in column sums (e.g. 41 − 8 giving 47). Point back to which number is on top.
Away from the screen
Eat some of a snack pile and ask how many are left. Spend pretend money and work out the change.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 60 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

❓ FAQ

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • It shows subtraction as movement down the number line. Taking away three means going down exactly three places, which makes the operation concrete.
