About Array Grid Architect

Array Grid Architect stacks each array against its mirror: three rows of four sits directly above four rows of three, and the child places the product for both. Seeing the same answer appear twice, in row after row, presents commutativity as something observed rather than something announced, and that difference matters. Told as a rule, the order does not matter is one more thing to remember and to doubt. Discovered by placing the same number twice, it becomes obvious, and an obvious fact halves the number of times-table facts a child has to learn — thirty-six pairs instead of seventy-two, which is the single largest saving available anywhere in the multiplication curriculum. Square arrays are excluded from the game entirely, because a five by five read either way is identical and therefore demonstrates nothing at all; every pair uses two different dimensions so the mirror is always visibly a different arrangement with the same answer. One array appears at the lower levels and two from the fourth, with factors growing up to twelve so the game keeps working as a child moves through their tables. Products are placed from a short palette, everything is operable by tap or keyboard, every cell is announced to screen readers with its position, and a wrong placement flashes and can be replaced with nothing lost. This game sits alongside our Array Builder Garden for younger children, which builds the picture rather than reading it. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 120 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

❓ FAQ

Common questions from parents & teachers

Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.

  • That the order of the factors does not change the product. Discovered by placing the same answer twice, it halves the number of table facts a child has to learn.
