About Bar Model Story Studio

Bar Model Story Studio takes a word problem and asks the child to represent it as bars before anything is calculated. The bar model is the centrepiece of the Singapore approach and it has spread everywhere for one reason: it converts the question children actually fail on — which operation do I need? — into something they can see. Once the bars are drawn, whether the answer comes from adding or subtracting is obvious from the picture, and the child no longer has to scan the wording for keywords that may or may not mean what they seem to. Keyword hunting is a genuinely bad habit that works for a year or two and then stops, because "how many more" can be a subtraction and "altogether" can appear in a problem that needs one, and no list of trigger words survives contact with real questions. Comparison problems appear here from the third level rather than being left out, and that matters. Part-whole bars are the easy case and children absorb them quickly; comparison bars, where one quantity is described only in relation to another, are where the model earns its reputation and exactly where a child who has only ever met part-whole comes unstuck. The first bar in each round is given as an anchor and the rest are the child's to place. Numbers grow with the level from tens into the hundreds. Every bar can be filled by tap or keyboard, each is announced to screen readers with its label, and a wrong value flashes and can be replaced with nothing lost. This is a very different task from Part Part Whole Boxes in Tiny Explorers, which has no story at all. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Find a calm few minutes with no rush. Let your child know it is fine to find some of it tricky — that is what practice is for.
While they work
Sit nearby but let them lead. If they get stuck, ask "what could you try?" rather than giving the answer — the thinking is the point.
Afterwards
Ask them to show you one they found easy and one they found hard. Praise the effort on the hard one, not just the right answers.
Watch out for
Rushing. If answers come too fast and wrong, slow the pace down together rather than pushing for more.
Away from the screen
Look for the same maths in everyday life — counting stairs, sharing snacks, spotting shapes on a walk.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 150 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.

Common questions from parents & teachers

  • A picture of a word problem drawn as bars. Once the bars are drawn, whether you add or subtract is visible rather than something to guess from the wording.
