All Smart Starters gamesCatch every pair of numbers that multiply to make the target. For ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Factor Pair Fishing asks a child to sort multiplications into those that hit a target and those that miss. Finding every factor pair of 24 means recognising that 1 and 24, 2 and 12, 3 and 8, and 4 and 6 all belong, and that 5 and 5 does not — and doing that by recognition rather than by working through every number in turn is what fluent factor knowledge looks like. Factors matter well beyond this stage. Simplifying fractions is finding a common factor; finding a lowest common denominator is working with multiples; recognising primes is noticing a number with no factor pairs beyond one and itself. A child who has to test every number from one upwards each time will find all of that slow and joyless, while one who sees 36 and immediately thinks of 6 and 6, 4 and 9, 3 and 12 has the work half done before starting. The near-misses on the board are chosen to sit close to the target rather than far from it, so guessing does not pay and a child who is one step out in their tables can be told apart from one who is picking at random. Targets always have several genuine factor pairs, which is what makes catching every one a real instruction rather than a trick. This game is the partner of our Multiples Maze Runner: factors and multiples are two readings of the same relationship, and meeting them side by side is how children stop mixing up the words. Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 110 seconds.
Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.
Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.
