All Smart Starters gamesFive locked doors, each asking what a remainder means in its own situation. For ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Remainder Interpreter Mission is an escape run where every door asks the same underlying division and a different question about the leftover. Sometimes the remainder means you need one more of something — the children who did not fit in the first four boats still have to cross. Sometimes it means you have one fewer than you counted, because a part-filled box is not a full box. Sometimes the remainder is itself the answer, as when the question asks how many sweets are left over. The arithmetic is identical in all three cases and the answer is different every time, which is why a child who has only practised bare division answers all three the same way and gets two of them wrong. What makes this worth an escape run rather than another quiz is the sequence. Five doors in a row, each a different reading of a leftover, means the child cannot settle into one interpretation and coast — every stage resets the question of what the situation is actually asking. That is closer to how remainders appear in tests and in life than a page of similar problems, where the format itself tells you what to do. Wrong answers cost a door rather than ending the run, and each stage carries a hint that reframes the question rather than giving the answer away. This sits above our Division with Remainders Rescue, which mixes bare division with context and is aimed at grade 3; here every stage is an interpretation. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.
Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 150 seconds.
Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.
Each level has 5 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
