All Smart Starters gamesBuild fluency in the 8 times table with multiplication, missing factors and division. For ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Times Table Eight Trail takes on the table children most often name as the hardest, and it is another of the ones England's Multiplication Tables Check over-samples for exactly that reason. The eights have no memorable digit pattern and no natural chant, so they receive less incidental practice than the twos or fives and arrive at testing time underdone. What the eights do have is the cleanest shortcut of any table: double three times. Eight sevens is seven doubled to fourteen, doubled to twenty eight, doubled to fifty six. Every step of that is a doubling a grade 3 child can already do, which means the eights are reachable even on a day when recall has deserted them — and knowing there is a route in changes how a child approaches a table they have been told is difficult. A child who has secured the fours gets there in one doubling rather than three. As with the other trails, three question forms appear rather than one: 8 times 6 in the usual direction, 8 times what makes 48 which a chant cannot produce, and 48 divided by 8 which is the same fact backwards. Straight multiplication holds for two levels before the other forms arrive, and multipliers reach twelve. Wrong markers are the neighbouring multiples and near non-multiples. Markers drift slowly and stop for reduced motion. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children, progress kept on the device.
Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 70 seconds.
Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.
Each level has 6 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.
