All Smart Starters gamesBuild fluency in the 4 times table with multiplication, missing factors and division. For ages 8 to 10.
Every activity is one step. Here is where this one fits.
Times Table Four Trail teaches a table that comes with its own shortcut, and the shortcut is worth as much as the facts. Four times anything is double it and double it again: four sevens is fourteen doubled, which is twenty-eight. A child who knows that has a way back into any four fact they have forgotten, and a child who does not is stuck with pure recall and nothing to fall back on when recall fails under pressure. Doubling is also already familiar by grade 3, so the fours are one of the cheapest tables to secure and a good place to build confidence before the harder ones arrive. This trail asks three question forms rather than one. It asks 4 times 6 in the usual way. It asks 4 times what makes 24, which a chant cannot answer because chants only run forwards. And it asks 24 divided by 4, which is the identical fact read backwards. Children who have only ever recited handle the first form and stall on the other two, and those two are the forms that turn up inside word problems and later inside division and fractions. Straight multiplication holds for the first two levels so the table is met before it is tested from other angles, and all three forms appear from the third. Multipliers reach twelve. Wrong markers are the neighbouring multiples plus near numbers that are not multiples, so a near miss and a guess look different. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.
Chosen by the skills this activity practises.
A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 70 seconds.
Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap or click the correct option. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.
Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.
Each level has 6 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
Mapped to national curriculum frameworks so teachers and parents can match practice to school standards.
Everything you need to know before your child starts playing.
