About Mental Maths Strategy
This is a reasoning worksheet rather than an arithmetic drill, and the difference shows in the options. Every method offered would reach the right answer — the question is which one is quickest in your head. Adding ninety-eight by adding a hundred and taking two back is faster than partitioning; multiplying by five is quicker as multiply by ten and halve; multiplying by nine is quicker as multiply by ten and subtract. All of those alternatives appear as options, and all of them work. That is the design: if three of the four options were simply wrong, a pupil could pass by eliminating errors instead of comparing methods, and the reasoning would go untested. The criterion is stated in every question rather than left implied, because a bare "what is the best way?" has no determinable answer and would make the key arbitrary. Calculations grow across the five levels, so the efficient method matters more as the numbers get less friendly. Eight questions per page with four options and tick boxes. Common questions
- Are the wrong options mathematically wrong?
- No — every option would reach the right answer. They are simply slower, which is what makes this a reasoning task.
- How is "best" defined?
- Every question states the criterion: easiest to work out mentally. A bare "best way" would have no determinable answer.
- What strategies are covered?
- Compensation, doubling and halving, multiplying by ten and adjusting, and partitioning.
- Is an answer key included?
- Yes. Every level downloads with a key naming the letter and the strategy.
A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
- While they work
- Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
- Afterwards
- Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
- Watch out for
- Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
- Away from the screen
- Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
