About Grid Method Multiplication
The grid method is where multiplication stops being a single mysterious procedure and becomes a set of small multiplications a child can already do. Twenty-seven times six is hard; twenty times six and seven times six are not, and adding the two results is the whole method. Printing the grid is what makes it reliable — the partitioned parts head the rows, the other factor heads the column, and each empty cell is visibly waiting for a product, so a child who misses one can see that they have. The partition is always by place value, because that is the version that transfers to long multiplication later. Grids grow from two-digit numbers partitioned into two parts up to three-digit numbers partitioned into three, so the method scales while staying the same method. A ruled line beneath each grid collects the total. Four grids per page with room to work. Each level prints as a clean A4 sheet in black and white and downloads with its own separate answer key. - Why print the grid?
- The empty cells are visibly waiting for a product, so a child who misses one can see that they have.

A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
- While they work
- Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
- Afterwards
- Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
- Watch out for
- Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
- Away from the screen
- Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
