About Partial Products Puzzle Box

Partial Products Puzzle Box writes each piece of a multiplication on its own line and adds them at the bottom. It is the same decomposition our Grid Method Multiply Lab lays out across a grid, deliberately presented the other way round, because the vertical list is the step between the grid and the compact column algorithm that eventually replaces both. Once the partial products are stacked, adding them is exactly what column multiplication does — silently, in a way that is very hard to see. A child who has written the list out a few dozen times has a much better chance of recognising what the compact method is doing when it arrives, rather than accepting it as a sequence of moves to memorise. Partial products is the term used in American Common Core material, and the vertical layout here matches how it is set out in those classrooms; the grid version carries the UK and Australian name for the same idea. Each row names one multiplication and the child places its answer, with the total underneath. Two-digit by one-digit to begin with, and two-digit by two-digit from the fourth level, where four partial products appear and the list stops being something a child can shortcut in their head. Every empty cell carries a clue naming the multiplication being asked for, with a fuller hint behind a button. Grids are worked by tap or keyboard, every cell is announced to screen readers, and a wrong number flashes and can be replaced with nothing lost. Free, no sign-up, no advertising to children.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

    A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 150 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

    Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

    Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

    Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
