About Partial Products Fill-in

Partial products is the grid method written on one line, and it is the step that carries a child from a drawn grid towards the compact column algorithm. Each question here prints the partition already made — thirty-four times six shown as thirty times six plus four times six — and asks for each product and then the total. Printing the intermediate step is deliberate and is what separates this from an ordinary multiplication worksheet: a bare sum would test whether a child can multiply, while this rehearses the method that makes multiplying larger numbers possible at all. Every partition is by place value, so the products line up with the columns a child will later write vertically. The numbers grow from two digits by one up to three digits by one across the levels, which lengthens the chain of partial products without changing what is being asked. Twelve questions per page in two columns with room to work. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
