About Long Multiplication Skyline

Long Multiplication Skyline is where everything the earlier multiplication games build gets compressed into the method a child will carry for the rest of school. The grid method shows the decomposition, the area model explains why splitting the numbers is allowed, and partial products stacks the pieces ready to add — long multiplication does all three at once and shows almost none of its working. That compression is exactly why it is worth arriving at last rather than first. Each round lays the method out as it is actually written: the number multiplied by the ones digit, then by the tens digit, then both added together. The tens row is where children go wrong, and they go wrong in one specific way. Multiplying by the 3 in 30 and forgetting that it is thirty rather than three produces an answer that is out by a factor of ten and still looks like a sensible number, so nothing about it feels wrong. This game therefore never pre-fills that row above the first level, and its label names the multiplication as times thirty rather than times three, so the tens are visible in the question rather than remembered. Two digits by two digits to begin with, and three digits by two from the third level, which is the range the grade 5 curriculum expects. Every answer is placed from a short palette, everything is operable by tap or keyboard, each cell is announced to screen readers, and a wrong number flashes and can be replaced with nothing lost. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

    A maths question is shown in large text at the centre of the play area. A timer bar begins counting down from 170 seconds.

  2. Choose the correct answer

    Answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap and drag, or use the mouse on desktop. Any input method works — touch, mouse or keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

    Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak. A longer streak lights up the flame icon and adds a bonus multiplier to the XP you earn for the level.

  4. Finish the level

    Each level has 4 questions. Complete them to earn the full level reward (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP for a perfect run). Progress is saved locally and shown on the Parent Dashboard.
