About Multiplication Division Fact Family Grid
Three numbers, four facts. From four, seven and twenty-eight a child can write two multiplications and two divisions, and the moment they see that, division stops being a separate thing to learn and becomes multiplication asked backwards. That single realisation halves the amount of memorising left to do, which is why fact families are worth a worksheet of their own rather than a paragraph in a division lesson. Each triangle here shows the product at the apex and the two factors at the base, with one corner left blank to complete, and ruled lines beside it for all four facts. Which corner is blank rotates down the page — always hiding the product would only ever practise multiplying the two factors, and the two division facts would never be needed. Every triangle is generated from its factors, so the product is always exactly their product and a mathematically impossible trio cannot appear. Factor sizes grow across the five levels, from small trios up to the full twelve times table. Six triangles per page. Common questions
- Why do fact families matter?
- They show that division is multiplication asked backwards, which halves the amount of memorising left to do.
- Why does the blank corner move?
- Always hiding the product would only practise multiplying. Moving it forces the two division facts to be used.
- Can a triangle be mathematically impossible?
- No. Each one is built from its factors, so the product is always exactly their product.
- Is an answer key included?
- Yes, listing all four facts for every triangle.
A hand for grown-ups
- Before you start
- Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
- While they work
- Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
- Afterwards
- Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
- Watch out for
- Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
- Away from the screen
- Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
