About Two Step Word Problems Mixed Operations

A two-step problem that uses the same operation twice is really a one-step problem in disguise. The ones that test anything mix them — multiply to find a total, then subtract what was used — and that mixing is where a child has to plan rather than react. Each problem here needs two different operations, and neither is signalled by a keyword: the numbers have to be understood in context first. The intermediate value is never stated and is not the answer, so the child has to hold it or, better, write it down, which is why ruled working space sits beneath every question. Every quantity stays whole, no intermediate value is ever negative, and the arithmetic in each individual step stays well within Grade 4 reach — the difficulty lives entirely in deciding what to do first, which is exactly where it should be for this objective. A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
