About 9 Times Table Pattern Fill-in

The nine times table has the best pattern in all the tables, and a child who is shown it stops finding nines hard almost immediately. Two facts do the work: the tens digit of the answer is always one less than the number you are multiplying by, and the two digits always add up to nine. Nine times seven, then, has a tens digit of six and a units digit that must make nine — sixty-three, with no recall required at all. This worksheet is built around that pattern rather than around plain repetition, which is why it is a different worksheet from the other times tables in this cluster and not simply the same generator with a nine in it. The first level states the rule alongside each question so it can be checked. The second asks for the answer and the digit sum together. The third asks only for the tens digit, which isolates the first half of the pattern. The fourth reverses the question, giving the product and asking for the multiplier, and the fifth turns it into division, because the pattern should survive being asked backwards. Common questions

What is the nines pattern?
The tens digit is one less than the multiplier, and the two digits always add up to nine. So 9 × 7 is sixty-something that sums to nine — 63.
How is this different from the other times table worksheets?
It is built around the pattern rather than repetition, so the questions ask about digits and structure, not just products.
Does the pattern work backwards?

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Think of it as groups: "4 × 3" is four groups of three. Have something you can arrange into equal groups.
While they work
Skip-counting (3, 6, 9, 12…) is a solid way in before facts are memorised. Let them use it — speed comes later.
Afterwards
Spot arrays in real life together — eggs in a box, tiles on a floor. Rows-and-columns is multiplication you can see.
Watch out for
Treating it as harder addition and losing track. Grouping objects physically keeps the "equal groups" idea in view.
Away from the screen
Lay out objects in rows and columns and count them two ways. Cooking with doubled recipes is multiplication too.
