About Mental Add Speed

Mental Add Speed is a math racing circuit with speed boosters. Children solve quick mental addition questions against a gentle timer, building fluency and speed. It is built for ages 5 to 7 with clear instructions, large touch targets, and gentle pacing, so children can play independently or alongside a parent. Correct answers bring encouraging sounds and a small celebration, while mistakes are never punished and simply invite another try, which keeps confidence high. Difficulty grows step by step so the challenge always matches the child, supporting steady, progressive learning across the grade 1 and grade 2 curriculum. The game runs in any modern browser with no app to install, no sign-up, and no advertising shown to children. Progress is saved only on the device and appears in the Parent Dashboard, so families can follow growth without any data leaving the browser. It pairs well with our matching Little Learners worksheets for offline practice of the same skills.

A hand for grown-ups

Before you start
Have something countable nearby. Being able to check "3 and 2 really is 5" by counting builds trust in the maths.
While they work
If a sum is hard, suggest counting on from the bigger number rather than counting both from one. It is a real strategy, not a crutch.
Afterwards
Try one together out loud, talking through how you worked it out. Hearing an adult think aloud is genuinely useful.
Watch out for
Counting both numbers from one every time. Nudge gently towards "start at the bigger one and count on".
Away from the screen
Add up small shopping items, or dots on two dice. Board games with dice are addition practice in disguise.

How to play

  1. A question appears on screen

An equation with a missing answer — for example "4 + 1 = ?" — is shown in large text. A timer bar starts counting down from 10 seconds.

  2. Tap or press the correct answer

Four answer options are shown as large buttons. Tap an answer, or press keys 1–4 on the keyboard.

  3. Build your streak

Each consecutive correct answer increases your streak counter. A streak of 5 or more turns the flame icon orange and awards a streak bonus to your XP for that level.

  4. Complete the level to finish

Each level has 6 questions. Complete them correctly to earn the full level XP (+10 XP, plus up to +10 XP perfect bonus). Your progress is saved automatically between sessions.
