What You'll Learn
Geometry is the mathematics of shape, size and position — naming and sorting shapes, measuring angles, finding area and perimeter, and describing where things are and how they move.
It is the strand where children who find arithmetic hard most often do well, because it rewards visual and spatial reasoning rather than recall. That makes it worth taking seriously rather than treating as the light relief between number topics: for some children it is where mathematical confidence starts.

How to Use Geometry & Shapes Practice
Handle real objects wherever possible. A shape held and turned teaches something a picture of it does not, particularly for 3-D work, where a drawing has already flattened the thing being described.
Area and perimeter are confused constantly, and the reliable fix is language rather than formulas: perimeter is the fence around the garden, area is the grass inside it. Ask which one a question wants before any calculation starts.

- Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape; area is the amount of surface inside it. Perimeter is the fence, area is the grass. Mixing them up is one of the most common errors in this topic.
- Not at all, and it is worth encouraging. Geometry draws on visual and spatial reasoning rather than recall, so children who find number work effortful often do noticeably better here.
- A net is a 3-D shape opened out flat — the shape a cardboard box makes when unfolded. Folding real nets is usually far more effective than looking at diagrams of them.
- Recognising right angles typically comes first, with measuring in degrees using a protractor following later. Placement varies between school systems.
- No. Household objects cover 3-D shapes, and paper folding covers symmetry. A ruler and a protractor are useful once angle measurement starts, but neither is needed early on.
