What You'll Learn
Fractions and decimals are two notations for the same idea: quantities between the whole numbers. A fraction names a number of equal parts; a decimal extends place value to the right of the point. Percentages are a third notation for the same thing, fixed to hundredths.
This is where many children first feel that maths has stopped making sense, and there is a specific reason. Almost everything they know about number stops being reliable: multiplying can make things smaller, 1/3 is bigger than 1/4 despite 4 being bigger than 3, and 0.5 is the same size as 0.50. The rules are not wrong — they were only ever rules about whole numbers.

How to Use Fractions & Decimals Practice
Keep a visual model in play far longer than feels necessary — a bar, a number line or a circle. Children who move to rules too early can often follow a procedure they cannot picture, which holds up until the questions get less predictable.
Two misconceptions are worth watching for specifically: that a bigger denominator means a bigger fraction, and that 0.5 is smaller than 0.45 because it has fewer digits. Both are sensible whole-number thinking applied where it does not hold, so the fix is a picture rather than a correction.

- Both describe quantities between whole numbers. A fraction shows equal parts of a whole; a decimal extends place value past the decimal point. They are two ways of writing the same kind of number.
- Because much of what they learned about whole numbers stops holding: multiplying can make a number smaller, and a bigger bottom number means smaller pieces. It is a genuine conceptual shift rather than a sign of falling behind.
- The bottom number says how many equal pieces the whole was cut into. More pieces means smaller pieces, so thirds are larger than quarters. A drawn bar or circle usually makes this land faster than an explanation.
- They are different notations for the same numbers — 1/2, 0.5 and 50% are the same quantity. Some are easier to write one way than another, which is the main reason all three notations survive.
- Conversions usually come after fractions and decimals are each secure on their own. Rushing conversion before that tends to produce a memorised trick rather than an understanding.
- Comparing and placing fractions on a number line, before any arithmetic with them. A child who can order fractions confidently finds adding them far more manageable.
