What is place value?

Place value is the idea that a digit is worth a different amount depending on where it sits. In 352 the 3 means 3 hundreds, the 5 means 5 tens and the 2 means 2 ones — which is why 352 is far more than 3 + 5 + 2.

What mistake should learners watch for in place value & number sense?

One error to watch for: reading a digit by its face value instead of its place. For example, saying the 4 in 47 is worth 4 rather than 40.

Place value is the idea that a digit's position determines its value — the 4 in 40 means four tens, not four. Number sense is the broader feel for how numbers behave: which is bigger, roughly what an answer should be, whether a result is plausible.

It is the quietest topic on this list and the one that causes the most trouble when it is weak. A child who cannot say what the 7 in 3,725 is worth will make errors in column addition, in rounding, in decimals and in long division that all look like different problems and are in fact the same one.
